The Dreamwall

Our goal with Dreamwall was to leverage AI as a creative tool, expanding the possibilities of digital art. By doing so, we offered a visual experience that is not only captivating but also perpetually new and exciting. The installation demonstrates how cutting-edge technology can enhance and transform artistic expression, providing viewers with an immersive and continually evolving experience.

For Dreamwall, I led the development of the behind-the-scenes system that powers its real-time generative artwork. Built for AllianceBernstein’s Hudson Yards office and directed by Emil Lanne, the piece required not just beautiful AI-generated images, but a way to continuously create them in a way that felt intentional and art-directed. I built a system that communicates with the Stability AI API to generate new images every minute, indefinitely—each one based on carefully curated prompt structures shaped by human aesthetic preferences.

To achieve consistency and predictability from a stochastic system, I first created a “mad libs”-style prompt generator to explore thousands of image combinations. I then built a lightweight rating interface that allowed the creative director to identify successful outputs. This data fed back into the system, allowing us to define templates that consistently produced the desired visual qualities. I also worked with Jiangnan Hou to develop the TouchDesigner system that drives the installation itself—pulling in new images, managing transitions, and ensuring smooth real-time playback on a large-scale video wall.

The result is a living installation that blends creative direction with generative chaos—a stream of AI hallucinations shaped by human feedback, running endlessly and uniquely in real time.
